National Award-winning Assamese filmmaker Rima Das has received Rs 1 crore from her state government for the Oscar campaign of her film Village Rockstars, which is India’s official entry to the 2019 Academy Awards.
Since Village Rockstars was announced as India’s nominee, Rima had been struggling to get funds to lobby the film for the Oscars.
“Promotions for Oscars are coming along well. We got Assam government’s money. We received Rs 1 crore from them. We have started our journey, now let’s see. We are hopeful,” Rima told indianexpress.com.
Rima Das is part of the jury for the Oxfam Best Film on Gender Equality award at the 20th edition of MAMI. The theme for this year’s award is “Cinema Beyond Stereotypes”.
Sharing what has left her impressed the most about the competing films, Rima said, “There are many films by male directors but deal with wonderful women characters and stories. That’s so nice to see. Women are finding their voices and that makes me so happy but the fact that so many men have told stories about women make me happier.”
Last year, it was Village Rockstars which won the Oxfam award.
