Indian households can’t do without the neighbourhood store. And consumer-goods companies pray at its abode. But it is beginning to feel the pinch of supermarkets and online stores.

December 2012. The BJP is in the opposition. The Congress-led government is about to introduce foreign direct investment (FDI) in retail. Word is, Walmart, the world’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer, is keen to bring its big-box stores to India. The BJP hates the idea.
